Startup Pitch

God has been speaking to me about sharing God’s heart and leading for the business especially among brothers and sisters. Many verses, songs and thoughts are all talking about this.

God kept bringing up Romans 12:1-2, that this applies not just to individuals but the business that we build with God. He wants me to “pitch” in His ways. To be honest this is not easy for me because it means being different. To be different among Christian community can be equally hard.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2)

God also said in Revelation 3:8, that I have a little strength but because/if I keep His words and acknowledge His name, the door that He opens can never be closed. He is speaking to me mainly about the coming pitch. To pitch His way, to acknowledge His name.

8 I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. (Revelation 3:8)

Morning devotion: God continued to speak about the coming pitch.

7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:7-9)

Joshua 1:9 was given to me right at the beginning of our current journey. However this time, the word that jumps out is VERY. I need to have more than normal courage. As I continued to meditate on this verse and ask God how to have more courage, the answer lies in Jesus Christ. The human courage is limited. VERY courageous can be seen as Divine courage. Only with Christ as our backer can we possess a Divine courage.

God continued speaking about the pitch almost everyday.

Romans 12:2 > Psalms 46:10 and Exodus 4:12

God repeatedly brought me to Romans 12:2, even one of my cell group meeting last Sat, we went deep into Romans 12:1-2. God is continuing to say Do not conform to the ways and systems of the world in building His startup but do not worry too much about how to build and what to say to people. Trust Him, I need to be still and know that He is God and trust Him. For the coming pitch He will help me speak and teach me what to say.

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.” (Psalms 46:10)

Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” (Exodus 4:12)

Utmost For His Highest devotion for Psalms 46:10 is especially assuring and edifying:

Perseverance is more than endurance. It is endurance combined with absolute assurance and certainty that what we are looking for is going to happen. Perseverance means more than just hanging on, which may be only exposing our fear of letting go and falling. Perseverance is our supreme effort of refusing to believe that our hero is going to be conquered. Our greatest fear is not that we will be damned, but that somehow Jesus Christ will be defeated. Also, our fear is that the very things our Lord stood for— love, justice, forgiveness, and kindness among men— will not win out in the end and will represent an unattainable goal for us. Then there is the call to spiritual perseverance. A call not to hang on and do nothing, but to work deliberately, knowing with certainty that God will never be defeated.

If our hopes seem to be experiencing disappointment right now, it simply means that they are being purified. Every hope or dream of the human mind will be fulfilled if it is noble and of God. But one of the greatest stresses in life is the stress of waiting for God. He brings fulfillment, “because you have kept My command to persevere…” (Revelation 3:10).

Continue to persevere spiritually.

Pitch was done as per how and what God wanted me to say. Thank God for leading. Honestly this was so hard for me. I spent a lot of time with God, praying and resting in His presence for the last 3 weeks leading to this pitch. Pitches or public speaking is usually quite easy for me. This time round, the pressure is to risk standing out like a sore thumb. Being different among Christians can be equally hard (or maybe even harder).

God does encourage us when we choose to obey. There were a few people who told me privately that they were most inspired by the way I pitched. This was really encouraging to me.

The posture of my heart was: “It’s entirely God, as a human I struggled to not conform to the patterns of the world.”

1 day after the pitch, God continues to speak about the same thing during Sunday service. Romans 12:2 > Psalms 46:10

1 Mar 2022

An angel investor reached out and I was quite surprised. In my mind I totally didn’t expect him to approach me. I met him for coffee. I thought we are going to talk investments. End up I felt we were mostly talking about spiritual stuff.

Posture of my heart: Alright God, maybe this meeting is also to share my spiritual experiences for this brother.

8 Mar 2022

Another “investor” reached out and spiritually I felt like this brother is very suitable.

We met for coffee and we spoke for more than 3 hours. I shared many things deeply over these 3 hours. Spiritually we connected really well. When he prayed I could sense a connection too. However we spoke zero about investments.

Posture of heart: God, I just spent another afternoon and I thought this will be for the business but well once again it seems like you are using me to be a mouth piece to share with others. Alright then, you will lead.

After the meeting, I was quite used to this type of meetings where I started with some assumption of what the meeting was for and it turned out God was using me to share the gospel or minister to others. I was quite peaceful.

However my colleague was quite disappointed. He is a man of great faith and deep intimacy with God. My wife was also quite disappointed. Now we all saw why God was literally shouting for the last few weeks to be still and know that He is God. He has prepared us beforehand because He knows it’s going to be quite tough for us to see nothing happening after being a sore thumb and obeying His commands and ways. It’s especially difficult as by the standards of the world we have no resources to do anything. By right we are desperate according to the standards of the world. Once again, by obeying everything God has commanded, we have come to a desperate place and then God wants us to be still. This pattern has played out so many times in this wilderness journey that I’m sort of used to it. Haha.

On the other hand this is not a personal journey. As a leader I need to be wise in balancing transparency with my colleagues versus sharing too much which becomes unnecessary burden upon their shoulders. There is a lot of learning for me in navigating everything God has put me through. It requires a lot of wisdom and discernment.
