Stewarding Resources (Needs versus Wants)

5 Oct 2025

Was seeking God about our thinking to make a trip to Shanghai.

One question I had was about needs versus wants and how to steward resources. For e.g. Shanghai trip is probably a want, although we will have chance to catch up with a few good friends etc but it’s still not a need. Should we spend the money then?

During the service, God did not answer me directly / specifically regarding Shanghai. He impressed to me that He is the Father. If I want to give something to the family and children as a father, He will honour and provide.

I understood and appreciated the authority and responsibilities given to me. God the Father left the decision to me. He the Father will honour me the father and my decision.

I also understood this is based on the foundation of a continued close intimacy with God so that our decisions are grounded in the Word of God and led by the Holy Spirit (led by Holy Spirit daily but may not need to have explicit confirmations on everything).

There are some implications going forward. For example, should we spend money my children’s ballet class versus use the money for our street children ministry.

This lesson/principle God taught me is important.

So long as we are abiding in Christ, and as a father I discern that I would like to provide for my child to attend ballet class, God will honour my decision and provide. At the same time, if we have a need for street children, God will provide. And even if as a father figure, I would like to bring the street children to a theme park (a want), God will provide.

This is what God taught me today.
